Mnemonic Devices as Memory Aid

Mnemonic devices are extremely efficient memory aids which can either be verbal, visual, auditory or kinesthetic. Verbal mnemonics can be in the form of short poems or special words. Mnemonics depend on the associations between constructs which are easy to remember and can related to the data that has to be remembered. This technique also depends on the fact that the human mind tends to remember information of surprising, humorous, sexual or spatial nature more easily than otherwise.





The term 'mnemonic' has been derived from Ancient Greek vocabulary from the word 'Mnemosyne' which means Goddess of Memory. Thus, they are often referred to as art of memory.

First letter mnemonics

One of the most common types of mnemonic device is the first letter mnemonic which is used particularly for remembering long lists using words, rhymes or phrases. The first letters of these sentences when joined together form the original word that was to be remembered. These techniques are easy to derive but are considered to be less powerful in comparison to the classical system as they do not use visualization techniques.
