Memory Improvement: Regular Exercise Keeps Mind Sharp

The secret behind memory improvement can be something that you already know about, that is Exercise. Do not run behind short cuts, magic pills or secret supplements that claim to bring about memory improvement as you age, as they do not do much good. According to studies, physical exercise is one of the best things that can benefit your memory. It is not only beneficial for age related memory loss, but also helps in putting off Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Exercise increases the flow of blood to the entire body including the brain. Not only this, it also retards the loss of brain tissues that takes place with age. Usually, aging makes remembering information as well as multitasking difficult. For example, one may need to pause and think what he or she was working on. Researches have proved that physical exercise aids memory improvement as it prevents various aging-related changes that take place in the brain.

How much exercise is required for memory improvement?

There is no limit on how much exercise is required for memory improvement. Even small amounts can be helpful in staying mentally active and sharp. In fact, it is most beneficial when done regularly that is, at least three times a week. The ultimate goal of carrying out physical exercises should be to do at least 30 minutes of exercise per day as it is the most beneficial for your heart, brain as well as the entire body.

If you are a beginner, you do not have to worry too much about time. You can simply start with small 15 minute sessions. Break up the session through the course of the day. Once you get the hang of it, you will automatically find yourself adding more time to the exercise routine and in turn, benefiting your own health.

Which types of exercises are paramount for memory improvement?

Though researches haven't focused on which type of exercise is the best, but simple exercises such as walking regularly have been proved to be helpful in memory improvement. Besides walking, you can try jogging, swimming or biking. Do not be too harsh on yourself; follow the pace which lets you talk while exercising.

When to expect results?

Do not expect any miracles to happen. Just like age related memory loss occur slowly, memory improvement is also a gradual process. However, you can expect subtle changes with time. The most important thing is to be consistent and not to give up.
