Memorization is something that all of us want to master, but still are reluctant about. We would rather take the help of our laptop or palm tops to make remembering convenient for us. It is something that we do not want to deal with at any time; even though it is something that is essential and something is we need to do.
Some of the best and most effective memorization techniques are:
- Funnel Approach
The funnel approach advocates the learning of the general concept before the specific details. When we study using this approach, the focus is on first absorbing the overview of what has to be learned. Details make more sense once the general concept is clear in our minds. - Organizing
Ordering and organizing the information is another of the memorization techniques that can play a big role in improving our memory. For instance, it would be extremely difficult to memorize a random list comprising of 62 letters. Alternatively, to remember a sentence comprising of 62 letters would not be difficult. In the same way, memorizing organized information is a lot simpler as compared to random information. - Organizing Using Associations
When we learn, we continuously associate the information with some recognizable object. These associations are made between what we have to learn and our environment; that is between our thoughts and the information. Have you ever tried retracing your steps when you lose your keys or any other object of importance? You must have noticed that when you reach the place where you keep them, all of a sudden you remember laying them down on a desk or putting them inside your bag. This is known as association. Some of the most common techniques of association are grouping and deep processing. - Vivid Associations
To learn something that is new and unfamiliar to you, try to associate it with anything that you are well familiar with, say music, images, puns or anything else. It is not necessary that this association makes sense or is logical. In fact, illogical and humorous information is more likely to be remembered. For example, if your want to remember the name Robert Green, imagine Robert covered in green paint, or Robert playing golf on the greens. - Teach the material to others
One of the most effective and interesting memorization techniques to strengthen your recalling as well as understanding skills is to teach that material to others imaginary people. These kind of memorization techniques are effective as they requires you to organize the material in such a way that it makes sense as well as prepare yourself of anticipated question that your imaginary students may ask. This will improve your comprehension of the topic, thereby improving your memory skills as well.
