Tools for Improving Memory
We are normally aware of how memory does it job and we let it carry out its operation without giving it much thought. However, in order to boost the effectiveness of memory or for improving memory, there are certain tools which can be extremely helpful in improving memory. Tool 1: Pay Attention The first and most important tool for improving memory is to pay attention. Inattentiveness is one of the major reasons behind ineffectiveness of the memory. Attention is considered to be the gateway to long lasting memory. Without attention, no information can be stored in the brain. Close attention also helps in moving the information from short term memory to long term memory. There are a few activities which can act as a barrier to paying attention. One of them is multitasking. While you are involved in multi-tasking, it may appear that you are paying attention, but your mind may be diverted somewhere else. So, if you want to do some task perfectly, carry them out one at a time. Tool 2: Organizing Organizing is important for improving memory. People have different abilities of storing information in their memory due to differences in how they organize their memories. In order to organize any information, the first step is to rearrange it into meaningful groups. Organization is an extremely powerful tool and is used by professional mnemonists to remember large amounts of information. Tool 3: Making Connections Making logical connections in the memory also helps in improve memory skills. These connections can be as simple as connection between ice and snow, or as difficult as interest rates on investments. Connections help in improving memory as it makes memories permanent and stronger. An isolated memory can be easily forgotten, but when connected with other information, it becomes a lot easier to navigate. Tool 4: Device a Plan Planning how to make effective use of the memory is another important tool for improving memory. People with strong visual memory can remember information more efficiently by visualizing it as an image. For example, remembering the name of a person would become a lot easier if you visualize it in the form of a printed word. Writing down the things that you want to remember also helps often. You can also make a friend or spouse a part of the memory plan as your memories could complement each other.
