I am starting over, or should I say really giving it a shot now. Last night it took me the longest to concentrate on the link method. so now i am going to do it again. I read the GMS link and see what it going on. It is just that I feel like I am taking too long to commit it to memory. What am I doing wrong???? Can anybody give me some real life suggestions. I am open and will check back as I am studying now. thanks.

In the beginning, just like when we learned to ride a bicycle, we were slow. You are not going to be an expert overnight. You did it. As you progress through the lessons, you will see that what you once thought was difficult is not and marvel
at why you worried about it. Speed will come. I mean it. When I started this course I could not remember a thing.
In fact, I worried I had a handicap for intentional memorization. I don't. I just did not know how to memorize and
had no method on how to retrieve that information.

The same will happen for you. Slow, then a little faster. If you put forth the effort and practice, speed will come.
I could not remember 5 or 6 things, let alone 75 or 120, when I first started. Now, as I study for an exam, I just
memorized over 120 words fast--maybe 5 minutes or less. It was quick. Then the information I really wanted
to recall was memorized quickly (I did not note the time.)

You can do it. I am sure of it. If you have questions, check with the instructors. There are also exercises that they will give you to help you on your focus.

Thank you because yesterday afternoon after I wrote that cry for help I continued on with lesson 1 and the Russian Doll and Cicero method were the best for me. I actually remembered them after a few tries. Now the Free Assosiation I am struggling with. I dont want to go on to lesson 2 until I get the Free Assosiation memmorized for fear that it will hinder me. So today that is my focus.
I do not know who my instructor is. How do I find that out? I just keep looking at the days go by so fast and I really need to be moving on because my semester starts on the 25th of this month and I need to be able to memorize things so I can get A's. I am trying to eliminate stress from my life./
Thanks again and perhaps I can keep in touch with you as I progress thru the lessons you seem like a very kind person. smile.gif

As to free association method: Think out of the box a bit. Here is an example. start with an object like a stove. What
comes up next? maybe a pan. What next? a can of soup? a piece of meat? okay. Next, if you thought of soup. What comes next? a bowl? or a spoon? next after that if you picked a bowl? maybe you had that bowl on a tray? etc. etc
one image associates with another . When you get the hang of it, you won't forget those because you
let your mind freely associate the string of items.

Tree: branch, leaf, bird, nest, egg, bacon, etc etc. Just let it rip. Don't worry about doing it wrong, because you are
probably doing it right.

One more: Guitar strap, guitar, guitar pick, (what could come next??) finger maybe; then ring; then ring is in the
jewelry box, etc etc.

There are no wrong answers. This is a way to generate support images and you will keep what you want to memorize in some order with this method. You will remember what you associated with the first thing, etc.

You will do good. I am sure of it. Experiment with it. Do it five times. More you do it, the better you will get at it.

Hey justice7

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I had originally bought the course back in 2007 and kinda lazied out/gave up after trying lesson 1. Just started working on it again yesterday.

Free association took me a little bit to adjust to as well (actually just finished the exercise 2 mins ago) but I ended up with this:

pillow, blanket, bed, alarm clock, watch, stack of money, car, stoplight, cop car, gun, bullet, target, target department store, christina aguilera(this association made me laugh cause her target commercials were the first thing that popped into my head), cd, ipod, headphones, ears, ear muffs, snowball.

So keep up practicing, cause its already getting easier for me as compared to yesterday and I'm sure the same will be for you.

I did exactly the same thing.I didnt complete it in 2 hours. so Im not sure if I need to do it over. What was cool was the next day i went through the excercises in my mind and most assc. were still there .
so should i start over ,not sure.Plus, the question was asked on how to contact an instrutor. I didnt see the answer

Contact an instructor through the lessons page. After each lesson, you can make comments, ask questions, etc. Also,
on the right hand side of the page, there is an "Ask a question" box. Click that and type in your question.

Also, when you click on the Lessons link to do a lesson at the top of the lesson page, is an "Ask A Question" link.

I have found the instructors respond quickly and are helpful. Good luck.

I am starting over, . . .

Back in the 1960's I enlisted in the US Army and was assigned to a school to learn Morse Code. None of us new recruits knew a thing about it and the going at first was slow and halting but we made progress. One of the important lessons I learned was that learning seems to happen in stages. Even though you are studying, no significant progress seems to happen for a long time and then suddenly, a leap happens. In learning the Morse Code there were predictable stages of sending and receiving. Students would be stuck at 5 words a minute for the longest time and then suddenly leap to 15. Then they would be stuck at 15 and plod along for days without any seeming progress and then the next day they would be at 25, then 35 then 55. It really was startling to realize that behind the scenes, in the unconscious mind, there was learning happening even if it did not immediately present itself. Keep at it and trust.
