How to Find a Job

Here is a good example of applying Phenomenal Memory in real life. One of my better students shared this story with me.

My student decided to apply for a job with a travel agency. When he was leaving for the interview, he grabbed a book by A. R. Luria, A Small Book on Big Memory, which describes the S.V. Shereshevsky phenomenon. During the interview, he mentioned Shereshevsky’s memorization abilities and hinted that he could do much better than that.

The staff manager interviewing my student called a couple of his colleagues in to witness this demonstration of memory tricks. They wrote down a random list of 100 two-digit numbers next to ordinal numbers of 1 through 100, and then gave the page to my student. In about 10 minutes, he had memorized all of the numbers.  Even more astonishing, he was able to reproduce every number -- in both direct and reverse order as well as randomly. At the end of the demonstration, my student also stated that it was just as easy for him to memorize names, cities, timetables, and voyage prices. He persuaded the company that his ability to learn was way above average, and suggested that he could quickly learn the company's travel logistics and be able to solve a variety of scheduling tasks with his phenomenal memory.

The interview proved to be a total success: he landed the job and got a very nice wage and benefits package with it.

In conclusion I must say that this young man was quite wise not to disclose the techniques he used to memorize the material. Instead, he implied that, like a circus artist, he had an extraordinary ability, and it was this ability which appealed to the company personnel.
